The German military is being criticized for only evacuating seven people from Kabul on its first evacuation flight. Five German nationals, one European National, and one Afghan citizen made up the seven passengers. After hours of circling the airport because the TARMAC was crowded with people, the A400M aircraft could only land for a few minutes, take a few people, and bring them to safety in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. A second aircraft took off from Kabul airport early Tuesday morning with over 120 people on board. The group of people included Germans, Afghans, and the rest were people from different countries, according to this tweet by Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.
More evacuations lead by the German military are happening during today, as well as the deployment of 600 German soldiers. Chancellor Angela Merkel has warned that Afghans fleeing to neighbouring countries could make their way to Europe, in a repeat of the 2015 migrant crisis, if they do not receive sufficient humanitarian assistance. “Reaching a common position within the EU is not easy. It is a weakness of the EU that we have not created a common asylum policy.”
