New Rules Proposed by the EPA for Engine Emissions

The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) just recently made public of new regulations, standards, and rules for emissions testing. This proposal would substitute the current smoke standards on large jet airplanes, and also set a smoke limit for smaller turbine aircrafts.

This proposal would affect the installation and building mechanisms for engines that have a maximum thrust of 6,000+ pounds. These regulations and rules, if passed, would be in immediate effect as soon as next year.

These emission standards would affect aircrafts that are newly developed, not ones that have currently been produced. Because these standards would affect the output of the engine, it would decrease the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions especially from large and light sized jets.

Additionally, it is important to note that this proposal, if passed, would not affect the manufacturers emissions produced but would instead affect the U.S’ compliance to the CO2 emission standards that were created by the Civil Aviation Organization.
