- First Passenger Supersonic Aircraft
American Airlines has agreed with Boom Supersonic to acquire 20 supersonic Overture airliners, according to a joint press release from the companies. The agreement has an option to purchase another 40 aircraft.
American Airlines, the largest carrier in the world, became the second customer of Boom Supersonic. The pioneer in June 2021 was another American airline United Airlines, which ordered 15 supersonic passenger aircraft. It is expected that the first supersonic aircraft will be made in 2025, and regular flights will begin in 2029.
The Overture could be the first passenger supersonic aircraft since Concorde, which was decommissioned in 2003. The aircraft will be able to reach speeds of Mach 1.7 and carry from 65 to 80 passengers over a distance of 4,250 nm, using environmentally friendly aviation fuel.
