  • How the US Military is helping the situation

Since the Taliban swept into the capital, many people are fleeing from the country out of fear, causing chaos at nearby airports. The Taliban fighters have been patrolling the streets of Kabul, and thousands of civilians have mobbed the city’s airport looking to leave the dangerous area. Many people are clinging onto the side of planes as they are taking off, causing 7 casualties, and several that were injured from falling off the plane.

The United States Military is sending about 1,000 troops to help safeguard the Kabul airport. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres urged the Taliban to show “the utmost restraint to protect lives” and demanded that anyone who wanted to leave the country must be able to do so. The UN security Council has called for a new government in Afghanistan that is “united, inclusive and representative, including with the full, equal and meaningful participation of women.”
