F/A-18 Super Hornet Fighter Jet blown off deck of USS Harry S Truman into the Mediterranean Sea

According to a Navy news release, “On July 8, 2022, a F/A-18 Super Hornet from Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1 embarked on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), was blown overboard due to unexpected severe weather in the Mediterranean Sea.”

The $65.9 million fighter jet is the same type as those in the most recent blockbuster sequel “Top Gun: Maverick”, flown by Tom Cruise.

One sailor was injured while performing operations, during the unexpected severe weather. The Sailor is in good condition and is anticipated to fully recover.

The Navy reports USS Harry S. Truman and embarked aircraft remain full mission capable.

The cause and details of the incident are under investigation.
